Achieving and Maintaining the Perfect Custom Spray Tan

Fabulously Flawless’ professional spray tan allows you to achieve a natural-looking tan without subjecting your skin to the harmful rays of the sun or tanning beds. Our tanning solution allows us to customize your spray tan by mixing the perfect shades to achieve your desired tan level to match your skin tone. But, getting ready for and maintaining the perfect spray tan takes a little work on your part. Following these steps will ensure that your spray tan is natural looking and help to provide lasting results.

Before Your Tan

  • For best results exfoliate for 1-2 days prior to your appointment.
  • Moisturize heavily the evening prior to your appointment to rehydrate your skin. DO NOT use moisturizer on your skin again prior to your spray tan appointment.
  • Wash, shower and lightly exfoliate using water only on the morning of the appointment. Do not use any soap or body products on the day of your appointment.
  • Do not shower within 3 hours of your spray tan appointment.
  • Do not wear any makeup, moisturizer, deodorant or perfume to your appointment if possible
  • Wear comfortable, loose, dark clothing to your spray tan session.
  • Undertake personal hair removal a minimum of 24 hours prior to your spray tan appointment (natural oils need to be restored before the spray tan)
  • If you shave with a razor with a moisturizing strip, remember that the strip will most likely create a barrier between your skin and the tan.  You can remove the moisturizing strip and/or exfoliate with a buffer (mitt and/or scrub) and water afterward.  Otherwise, you will not have great results.

After Your Tan

  • Wear loose dark clothing after your spray tan, preferably a top where you don’t have to put a bra back on. Avoid wearing any tight clothing, including shoes until your tan has developed. Avoid heavy exercising until after your shower.  Do not wear red clothing.  This can potentially turn the bronzer green whilst it is on your skin prior to showering.
  • Do not shower, swim or exercise heavily for 2-8 hours (depending on which solution you sprayed).
  • During your shower, you will notice spray tan solution washing away. Don’t worry… this is NOT your tan coming off, it’s just the excess color guide that is still on your skin.
  • After your shower pat yourself dry and do NOT rub. Make sure you do this after every shower.
  • No products on your skin for 24 hours after your spray tan appointment.  This includes body wash, soap, deodorant, moisturizers and hair products.  If you wish to wash under your arms and your intimate areas this is fine but keep all products off the rest of your body until the 24 hour period has passed.  This is to ensure that the tan develops as naturally as possible without being inhibited or influenced by products whilst the tan is still in its development stage.
  • Washing your hair the day of an appointment is known to affect the outcome of the spray tan, potentially blocking the tan and leaving “reverse drip marks” when not washed off properly.
  • If clients are going to wash their hair the same day as their appointment they should not do so within 3 hours of their appointment time slot and they should also give themselves a light exfoliation afterward (with water only) to ensure that no product is left on the skin. Product build-up mainly happens around the shoulder and lower back area where the hair can sit directly on the client’s skin, and drip down the body in these areas.
  • We are now discovering the pH level of the skin is really important when it comes to spray tanning and the development of the tan.
  • Spray tan solutions are formulated with a pH of around 4 – 6, so the standard pH level of the skin is perfectly suited to a spray tan solution. Having a skin’s pH with too high or too low a reading can potentially affect the outcome of the spray tan result.
  • Use the right professional tan preparation and aftercare products.  The wrong products can strip your skin barrier causing your tan to be compromised.  Most soaps are very alkaline and it can take a while for your skin to ‘reset’.   It takes about 1 pH point per hour to get back to natural pH levels, so while the skin is resetting it can get extremely dry or oily.  Products that have pH levels closer to your skin’s natural state can make your tan last longer.  That is why we researched and offer products that can help you enjoy your tan.

Please remember that your spray tan will not last as long without following aftercare advice.  The way a spray tan lasts and looks on a client’s skin is a 50/50% split between us and you.  We apply the spray tan and you have to maintain and look after the spray tan to get the best results and longest tan possible.  Please prep properly prior to your appointment.
